Why I'm Ditching the Scale

Sometimes in your life, you just have to put your foot down. Even if this means it's a decision that you don't really want to do!

Y'all, I'm probably the world's worst about stepping on the scale every. single. day! It's not good. It gives me huge mood swings. From elated because I went down 2 lbs to depressed because I went back up three. I don't let my kids see the mood swings, but they do see me step on the scale. Yikes.
And yes, I KNOW if I'm going to use the scale I should do it once a week. But let's be honest here, who really does that??

So, I've made a decision. My scale is off limits. I'm not touching it. I made the decision on Monday March 16th. This is the same day I took a "before" picture of me. I'm not sharing it publicly because it's me in my undies and it's not something y'all want to see. Let's just trust that it exists, mk?
On Monday March 30th I'll take another picture (two weeks) and another one on April 15th.

I'm committing to 30 days of really being serious about working out. I'm holding myself accountable. A few of my close friends already knew that I've made the decision to doing ALL 30 days of the Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred. I've always made it like 5 days tops. Not anymore.

One of my close bloggy friends, Kasey, (you should totally check her out) committed to 30 days of barre classes. She's truly an inspiration. I, however, cannot afford a gym membership or fun classes like The Barre, so I have to work with what I've got.
What I've got includes daily walks / runs to the park with Ainsley (and Zander when he's out of school... spring break will be a blast!). Working out using the play ground equipment. (Christine has some great suggestions if you'd like to give those a try at the playground!) Jillian Michael's DVD, and Cassie gave me some great suggestions for at home workouts.

So ultimately, I'm still on my goal to getting healthy. I'm still aiming to lose 25-30 lbs by my brother in law's wedding. Only, I'm stepping away from the scale. I'm going to rely on the mirror and the way my clothes fit. I'm going to rely on my energy boosts from after a workout. I really feel like doing all of this will not only help me and my self esteem, but it will help my kids too. It will help them see that we don't have to rely on a number in a box to tell us that we're enough.

Have you ditched your scale? How is your workout routine? Can we encourage each other?

  1. Good for you! I struggled with eating disorders my whole life, and my life got so much happier when I finally got rid of the scale. It can be useful, as long as you don't abuse it. But really, those numbers don't mean anything to you today. If you are doing your best and feeling good then use that to rate how successful you are, not stupid numbers. I'm loving your blog and glad I found it!

  2. Yes!! I did the same thing. I couldn't stand the roller coaster. I haven't weighed myself in months and feel great about it. I know I've lose weight but don't care about the number. Also I thought the Shred was the bomb... I lost about 7 pounds once I finished the 30 days. I've moved primarily to weights now, though, and feel much happier. Let me know if you need an accountability buddy! You can do it!

  3. You're amazing, pretty lady. I love this. When there is something that is bothering you, sometimes, the best thing to do is walk away for a while. I think your plan is great. And more importantly than anything is just simply making the effort to live a healthier life. Lots of love!! <3 xoxo

  4. I stopped using the scale too because it was making me feel anxious. I tend to just go by how I feel now. I have had a bad cold and so I haven't felt like working out, but this week I want to get back into my running routine.

  7. thanks SO much friend!! :) I noticed that the more I used the scale, the more the kids would step on after me. NOW, we've all just stopped using it. thanks for all of your support!

  8. I caved and took another picture yesterday, one week after the first. I was amazed at the change. it was slight, but it was there! I'm glad you like the shred. now that I'm really committing to it, I'm loving it. I've had to change the time of day I do it though. We're potty training Ainsley and I have to shred while she naps so I don't have to keep pausing it. I'll always take more accountability buddies!!

  9. AMEN to that!! Stupid numbers don't need to control how I feel about myself! Plus, I don't wan my kids to stress about it. lol. I'm so glad you're liking it here! :) WELCOME!!

  10. Ditching the scale is a fab idea. I too would let it decide how I was feeling for the day - although I would only weigh in once a week, mainly because I didn't want to see what it said! I like this idea though... I've also heard to measure yourself instead of relying on the scale, because you can lose inches and no pounds! Muscle weighs more than fat :) I'm with you!!

  11. YAY! it's been so great not having to rely on it. I wish I had a measuring tape so I could record inches. I can tell a difference just in this last week. :) you're right, muscle does weigh more than fat!

  12. Use a piece of string and mark each area with a different colored marker! Waist = blue, thigh = purple, etc. Then you can still track it!

  13. YOU GO GIRL! I've never been one who checks the scale, so I can't relate to you there, but that does lead to some surprises when you go in for doctors appointments. I'm sure you'll be amazed at what some extra walking and some home exercises can do if you stick with it! I'll be here to encourage ya whenever you need it. Unfortunately my current "workout" routine is a bunch of physical therapy exercises right now - I should find out if I need surgery on Thursday :( Hopefully if I get the surgery, I can be more active than ever after I recover!

  14. thanks so much!! Thinking of you for your next appointment on thursday. hopefully you get the news that you want!!

  15. I used to obsessively check the scale. I would always only check it once and at the same time, but I did it every day, and that isn't healthy. Of course, this was back when I was on Weight Watchers - so....yea. I need to do this too. I actually need to work out again and eat better, because I have packed on some lbs since my wedding. Sigh. I am just not motivated at all to fix it.

  16. it's horrible!! when I saw Zander AND Ainsley both step on it after me I knew I had to change. like big time. I'LL HELP YOU GET MOTIVATED! LOL. what can I do??

  17. I ditched the scale and go by the feel of my clothes....I hated that a number dictated my day!

  18. I fell into the habit of compulsively checking my scale and I realized when I focused so much on the numbers instead of end goals/fitness I let it toy with my emotions too much and often found myself being railroaded by myself. Instead I started focusing on my fitness and how working out hard made me feel afterwards. I made notice of how much better I felt eating less sugar and had more energy. Now when I have those small victories they just feel better. Way to go girl making that decision and working hard for your goals. 30 Day Shred is great! Keep it up :)

  19. YES! it's horrible to let that # say how I felt!

  20. it's SO BAD! I'm so happy that I've moved it away from the bathroom. I can't see it anymore so I don't want to step on it daily. best feeling EVER! :) it's definitely the small things that make it worth it in the end. heck, today I ate jelly beans and felt horrible afterwards. the sugar made me very sick. lol. thanks for the encouragement!

  23. good for you! PLUS if it makes you feel any better? I went to the doctor yesterday + apparently I have GAINED ten pounds during this whole thing. I can't do scales because my weight is all over the map all the time. scales are stupid.

  30. thanks SO much!! :) I'm thankful for friends like you to encourage me on and support! :) I'm feeling REALLY good about this and my attitudes each day are much better. The feeling I get after a good workout is MUCH better than worrying about what that number is!

  31. THANK YOU!! I'm so thrilled with my choice and I feel amazing. I just did a HUGE 20 min HIIT workout and I feel amazing. I know I'm doing what's best for me and teaching my kids that scales DON'T MATTER (no matter what the silly doctor says!)

  32. this is SO good to hear! i got rid of my scale in a move a few years ago and it's been so freeing not to have it even in the house. the number doesn't matter. how you feel does. how your clothes fit can help guide this. keep rocking it!
